Interdisciplinary research conference on bystanders and the impact of norms and normalisation on individual behaviour
The Living history forum and the Departments of History at the universities of Uppsala and Stockholm, together with the Department of Education, Culture and Media, Uppsala University are organizing an interdisciplinary research conference to be held on October 17-18 2008 in Uppsala.
The conference aims at bringing together international and Nordic scholars for exchange of ideas and discussions on the importance of norm-shifting and the process of normalisation in creating “bystanders”. The conference will be divided into four themes:
- The definition of the concept bystander? How can it be defined? What does the concept onlooker imply and how does it relate to the bystander concept?
- The norm-shifting process and its implication for individual behaviour – different explanatory models;
- Methodological aspects in studying the bystander - from a specific to a more general approach; to tell the story of a non-event; how to interpret silence; comparability, etc
- Pedagogical/didactical issues - how do we approach the bystander issue for an educational point of view;
The Conference is part of a major theme project at the Living history Forum – “Spelar roll”. The project focuses on the role of the bystander and the consequences of passivity. Norms and normalisation is one of the major themes in the project which consists of educational material, an exhibition and a research component.
A research anthology will be produced in conjunction with the conference.
